Tyler Burns

Currently working as Director of Investor Relations and Marketing at Wi-LAN Inc., Tyler Burns has been with the Canadian technology development and intellectual property licensing company listed on the TSX and NASDAQ for over seven years. With more than 18 years of experience in the marketing and technology industry, Burns has been behind some high profile acquisitions and contracts at Wi-LAN.   Burns earned his Bachelor’s of Engineering from Ottawa’s Carleton University in 1993. With an emphasis on aerodynamics and propulsion, Burns was able to translate his specialized training and repurpose it to serve him in his various technological endeavours and executive positions. Burns helped create the Wifi chip manufacturing company IceFyre Semiconductor Inc. and served as the company’s Product Marketing Manager until 2005. He has also held the positions of Senior Marketing Executive at Azimuth Systems, as well as Marcom Manager at Philsar Semiconductor Inc., prior to his current role at Wi-LAN.    Known as an industry expert, Tyler Burns is often interviewed and asked to comment on current innovation and technological developments, and intellectual property licensing issues by both Canadian and American media outlets. Burns is also known as an industry consultant and has advised numerous American high-tech companies.   Named one of the Top 40 Under 40 by the Ottawa Business Journal in 2009, one of his greatest attributes is his ability to think outside the box and comfort zone. This versatility has allowed him to use his engineering training in new and innovative ways that have both benefited him and Wi-LAN. Burns legacy at Wi-LAN will include his commitment to sustaining 20-30 per cent growth in Wi-LAN’s account sector over a five year period, leading to increased confidence and shareholder revenues.   Burns is also passionate about volunteer work and sits on a variety of advisory boards. He is a member of Ottawa’s White Coat Committee. In addition, Burns is a member of the program committee at the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI), a centre aimed at advancing Ottawa’s knowledge based economy.  Burns is also a member of the Canadian Investors Relations Institute (CIRI). His dedication to education is also evidenced by his involvement with Project North, a program aimed at boosting literacy rates and promoting physical activity for Canada’s Northern Inuit youth.   When he is not working or volunteering, Tyler Burns enjoys traveling the globe with his wife; some of their favourite destinations include Hawaii and South Africa. While taking an international flight, Burns may be seen reading a novel from his favourite author Robin Sharma or watching one of the many films his loves like Shawshank Redemption or The Right Stuff. Burns is an avid sailor and enjoys the many waterways around Ottawa and southern Ontario.
